What are Evacuation Chairs?
Evacuation Chairs are specially designed seats into which mobility-impaired people are secured and transported from a building, usually via stairways during and emergency.
The evacuation chair is our top selling product globally. We currently have a range of 3 different tracked evacuation chairs, each with specific features. They are all specially designed products, for disabled people, or those who are otherwise mobility-impaired, in the event of an emergency where a building needs to be evacuated.
The tracks, wheels, lightweight and ease-of-use make them the perfect solution when the descent is required via stairwells.
The Evacusafe range can be found in buildings all over the world. They are products with the sole purpose to ensure every person gets the chance to escape from a building in the event of an emergency.
How are people secured into evacuation chairs?
Comfort and security come in the form of their ergonomic design, which takes into consideration the fact that some people may need to be physically strapped and secured for their own protection.
Vital strapping, combined with staff training, has been proven to prevent unnecessary further injuries.
Often used in an emergency situation, such as a building fire, where reduced mobility may hinder a safe escape. Evacuation chairs have been specifically designed to remove someone with insufficient ability to move freely and easily, from a place of danger to a safer location.

Is evacuation chair training necessary?
The delivery of a training course will give your staff members the knowledge and confidence to use the evacuation chairs. In some circumstances, a chair may be used by a single operator, whereas, for safety, a number of operators may be required. We believe the correct training will provide the correct handling techniques and also the knowledge of issues faced by those people who need to use an evacuation chair.
They are extremely strong and robust, whilst being light enough to make operating easy and effective. We do recommend training courses so that those responsible to use the chairs have the confidence to do so under the added pressure of an emergency.
Therefore, evacuation chairs provide an equal means of escape for all. That is why they are also known as escape chairs. Nobody knows when an emergency situation may arise in a building and it is always best to have safety measures in place. In fact, it’s a legal requirement for business premises.
We always recommend training is undertaken by anyone responsible for using this kind of equipment to move someone to a place of safety. This ensures people follow safety procedures correctly when using this specialist mobility assistance equipment, and therefore the safety of the person being evacuated or moved.
How easy are they to use?
They are quick to assemble right out of the box and easy to use, wide enough to fit most people, and have wheels to assists with pushing along flat surfaces, and specially designed tracks that come in to play when they are required for the ascent or descent of stairs. The tracks work by causing friction on stairways, which is ideal for both safety and handling.
Each model comes with a variety of features designed to provide comfort and reassurance for the evacuee. Everything has been taken into account with Evacusafe’s products, from the initial set-up time, to how it should be operated by staff who have received training, to the perfect storage.
How is an evacuation chair stored?
Whilst not in use, storage is simple because the evacuation chair can be folded and placed on a special wall bracket, with a branded dust cover and a sign making it easily identifiable by any user. Every Evacusafe escape chair comes with wall-mountable brackets, a dust cover and a sign. You may have even spotted them on the walls of a building you have visited as they’re usually positioned at the top of stairwells.
Are evacuation chairs safe and easy to use?
Each chair from Evacusafe can be used by a single person, during an emergency evacuation, to enable a mobility-impaired person to evacuate a building.
Additional people may be required to assist with the use of an emergency evacuation chair if the exit of your premises is required via stairs. The need for additional operators would be due to steadying the weight of the load when lifting is a key manoeuvre (this is not suitable for one single person).
An evacuation chair is a fantastic tool for the evacuation solution for the majority of mobility-impaired people. This is what makes them so popular all over the world. They are lightweight, making them simple for the operator, or operators, to use.
Why would anyone require an evacuation chair?
There are many reasons as to why a person may require assistance during an emergency situation, or simply help with getting around a building on a daily basis.
Who would require an evacuation chair?
Some examples could be a physical disability, an injury, mental health issues, heavy stages of pregnancy or other medical conditions. An evacuation chair provides the perfect solution for most situations. As already states, an issue with mobility might not be immediately obvious.

Where are they used?
The Evacuation Chair models we manufacture can be found in some very prestigious buildings all over the world, such as the Burj Khalifa skyscraper, along with the Rose Rayhaan Hotel in Dubai as well as Emirates Airlines. We supply the NHS, Travelodge, Sainsbury’s and many more businesses throughout the UK and abroad. They are in regular use at many hospitals, care homes, schools, government buildings, offices, restaurants and many more locations.
UK disability discrimination law, what is required?
The UK has legislation in place with regulations that may affect your company. The Disability Discrimination Act 1995, now superseded by the Equality Act 2010, states “no person, or persons, may be discriminated against because they suffer from a disability”. Failure to comply may result in the business owner being held to account and heavy fines can be issued. It’s plain and simple.
It is now a legal requirement for all business and public premises to offer all visitors the chance of a safe escape in the event of an emergency situation. This includes anyone who is disabled due to physical or mental health conditions. Not all disabilities are immediately obvious, such as a wheelchair. Therefore, you may not realise that a visitor to your premises is unable to evacuate themselves.
Evacusafe offers a range of high-quality products that are suitable with regards to ensuring your company complies with the UK laws.
We also offer training courses which enable you or your staff to safely use specialist evacuation equipment.
To read more about current legislation and your responsibility to provide a safe exit for all, including the provision of Evacuation Chairs, please see The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005.
